Celloglazing (Film Laminating)

Comparison with and withou celloglazing

In collaboration with Doering Druck/Blueprint

Celloglazing is used to protect the print object. How can you describe this term in two sentences?

Celloglazing applies an extremely thin one- or two-sided film to the print product. Pressure and heat create a full-surface compound of the print object and the film.

What is special about celloglazing?

Celloglazing protects printed products from marking through handling and from general wear and tear. In addition celloglazed products acquire a classic, elegant look and a pleasant touch to deliver a positive haptic experience.

Which films are used for celloglazing?

The following four types of film are used:

While matt surfaces are normally very delicate, a matt film can make the print product more scratchproof. A matt and scratchproof film creates an extremely high level of scratch resistance. All matt films create a pleasant haptic experience. Gloss film brings out the intensity of the print colours, whereas soft touch films create a pleasantly warm and velvety surface.

Best possible uses of celloglazing?

The method is suitable if you want to create a durable print product. Flyers, (business) cards and brochures are frequently celloglazed.

How does the technique work?

The process is similar to laminating. Extremely thin films are wrapped around the print object and joined together. Both one-sided and double-sided celloglazing is possible.

Depending on the paper surface, this finishing process might lead to undesirable effects. On coated, smooth surfaces, it generates a homogenous area. Using open or rough paper surfaces, for example Metapaper’s EXTRAROUGH, can lead to air inclusions between the film and the paper. This may create an untidy look, but in some cases might also be a desirable design effect.
