Brochure
"On March 1, 1950, Otto Gilch opened an embossing workshop in a former steam boiler room at Mozartstrasse 18. The equipment consisted of a borrowed hand press from the bookbinder Krausbarth and a borrowed cardboard shear from Pappen Anger. Initially, book covers were primarily embossed here, using the simplest of means and many hours of overtime," is how Stephan Gilch's grandfather documented the founding of the bookbindery. His father, Rolf Maximilian Gilch, developed this into a classic craft business, which from these spartan beginnings has grown into one of the most modern of its kind: "Der Gilch."
Today, spacious premises are available near Munich's East Station. Traditional machines and tools still stand alongside cutting-edge, computer-controlled equipment, allowing individual books and custom orders to be processed using time-honored techniques. An iron press compresses the sheets of paper, the finished book block, sewn by hand, is perhaps further embellished with elaborate gilt edges before being fitted with the binding. Here, books can be newly made, repaired, and even given an "antique" look upon request.
However, technological advancements and modern techniques have long since found their way into the workshop—for the diverse tasks of a contemporary bookbindery, such as digital and offset printing, large-format printing, hot foil stamping, blind embossing, relief stamping, laminating and mounting, cutting, die-cutting, scoring, perforating, and embossing on paper, fabric, and leather. Leather boxes and slipcases are produced, packaging, folders, and bags are folded, calendars are perforated, albums are glued, and even missing film props, such as authentic chocolate boxes, are recreated.
A feel for materials, experience, and the skill to work with them—that's what a bookbinder needs. Stephan Gilch and his exclusively qualified staff possess these qualities; he himself is a master in this ancient craft. His wife, Petra, also comes from a family of bookbinders. And the next generation is already ready: daughter Uschi has to learn bookbinding from scratch and heads the digital printing department.
